The American Red Cross is recognized worldwide as the source for humanitarian assistance in times of war and disaster. Bi-Lingual International Assistant Services is a non-for-profit organization with main focus on provision of Quality Mental Health and Social Services to the elderly and disabled foreign born consumers in an accessible linguistically and culturally sensitive way. CCRS assists refugees with attaining the skills that are necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and make a successful transition in the US. Services consist of refugee resettlement and job upgrade services, including basic needs provision (housing, utilities, household goods, clothing, food, and transportation), community orientation, health screenings and immunizations, school enrollment, support with Social Security and public assistance applications, information and referral services, employment services (job referrals, job search skills, and resume assistance), diploma and certificate translation, and volunteer mentors who provide English language, career related, and cultural assistance.

The ESOL/Bilingual Program of the St. Louis Public Schools was founded in 1980. Since its inception, the program has served more than 20,000 students from more than 87 countries. Major language groups served are Bosnian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese. The major language groups change constantly in response to a changing world. The program yearly assists around 2,500 students in the 25 schools where it offers services. The goal of the English to Speakers of Other Languages Program is to help language minority students better succeed in the overall educational system. Services include content-based ESOL instruction and, wherever possible, bilingual instruction in the areas of math, science and social studies. An ESOL teacher and a bilingual instructional aid staff each of the centers. All centers are also served by an ESOL social worker whose role is to help students and their families adjust to school in St. Louis, and to assist students in attending school on a regular basis. An academic counselor serves ESOL students at the high school level. The counselor helps a student plan his or her high school career and assist in planning for the future after completion of high school.

Title I-C is a national program that provides supplemental educational and supportive services to eligible children each year. These services help children of qualifying workers overcome the disadvantages they face including disruption of their education. Provides ESL instruction leading students toward college-level proficiency in English. Students focus on improving reading and writing skills, and then enroll in college degree and transfer courses as they gain proficiency. Program features gradual mainstreaming based on the individual student’s performance. Some proficiency in English is needed to begin the ESL courses as beginning courses are not offered. Raises awareness of refugee situation by speaking at houses of worship, schools, etc. Began as outreach program to the Vietnamese community. This community based action project formulates a practice program to help alleviate the negative psychosocial effects of war trauma in adolescents resettled with their families from Bosnia and Herzegovina/Former Yugoslavia in St. Louis and support their adjustment to the US culture. The program includes youths, their parents, teachers, organizations for educational needs and employment. In addition to individual sessions, groups of youth are having regular monthly meetings to discuss questions and problems of vital importance.

The War Trauma Recovery Project, Inc. reaches out to communities and individuals who have suffered traumas resulting from war or crimes such as domestic violence. We provide education and treatment of symptoms that interfere with normal function and degrade quality of life. We serve primarily refugees and immigrants with first languages other than English. Community outreach and individual psychological treatment are conducted in clients' languages or through professional interpreters. Education and treatment are provided by a licensed clinical social worker or a professional counselor with extensive experience working with immigrants and refugees. We are a not for profit corporation certified by the Missouri Department of Mental Health. In most cases services are paid for by grants.
